The hundred quiet posts before one finally takes off.

Consistency creates trails.

Eventually those trails become roads.

Then everyone assumes the road was always there.

Nature doesn’t reward intensity.

It rewards repetition.

A lion doesn’t hunt once and expect to eat forever.

A weaver bird doesn’t build half a nest and hope the wind finishes the job.

An elephant doesn’t walk to water only when it feels inspired.

The bush runs on habits.

So do meaningful businesses.

So do great writers.

We spend too much time looking for shortcuts.

The bush doesn’t believe in shortcuts.

It believes in paths.

Paths created by doing the simple things, repeatedly, for a very long time.

That’s why consistency almost always beats talent.

Because talent can disappear when motivation fades.

There’s a moment in the bushveld, right before the dry season breaks, when every animal within twenty kilometers somehow knows exactly where the last water is.

Nobody sends a memo. Nobody posts about it. The herd doesn’t gather because of a clever caption. It gathers because the water’s been there, in the same place, every single day, for longer than anyone can remember. The animals didn’t find the water. The water found a way to always be findable.

Most people building something on Substack have this backwards.

They write one good piece. They wait for it to travel. They check the stats every four hours like the numbers are going to apologize to them. And when nothing happens, they decide the niche was wrong, or the title was wrong, or the algorithm hates them personally. It wasn’t any of that. There just wasn’t enough water yet.

A watering hole isn’t a single dramatic downpour. It’s the boring accumulation of the same reliable thing, in the same reliable place, for longer than feels reasonable. Day 4 looks identical to day 40. That’s not a flaw in the plan. That’s the plan working exactly as slowly as it’s supposed to.

Here’s what nobody tells you when you start a newsletter: the writing was never the hard part. Showing up to write when the silence hasn’t broken yet — that’s the part that thins the herd. Most people quit somewhere around the 300th unremarkable post, certain they’ve been wasting their time, three weeks before the spike that would’ve proven otherwise.

I think about the predators here too. The leopard doesn’t stalk every patch of grass on the property. It picks the route to the water and waits, because it already understands something the impatient writer hasn’t figured out yet — the traffic comes to the source, not the other way around. You don’t chase readers across the internet. You become the most reliable place to drink, and let the dry season do the rest of the work for you.

This is the part people skip because it’s unglamorous: reliability is a worse story than talent, but it’s a much better strategy. Nobody wants to hear that the secret was just publishing on Tuesday for two years. They want the lightning strike. The bushveld doesn’t really do lightning strikes. It does seasons. Long, repetitive, unfilmable seasons that quietly decide who survives the year and who doesn’t.

So if your numbers are flat, that’s not the verdict. That’s the season you’re currently standing in. The question isn’t “why isn’t this working.” The question is whether you’re still going to be at the water’s edge when the herd finally needs somewhere to drink.

Most won’t be. They’ll have wandered off looking for a faster river that was never going to exist.

The ones who are still standing there, same spot, same time, same unglamorous Tuesday — they’re not the lucky ones. They’re just the ones who understood, earlier than everyone else, that the water was never coming to find them.

I live in a small town bordering the famous Kruger National Park in South Africa.

I've watched a lioness lie in the shade for hours, not moving, while impala graze close enough to touch.

Then, with no warning, no ceremony — she goes.

Nobody tells her it's time.

We've turned "readiness" into a religion.

We wait to feel confident.

We wait for the version of ourselves who has more time, more energy, more certainty.

The Bushveld has no patience for that story.

The sun rises whether the lioness is ready or not.

The herd moves whether she's hunting or not.

Hesitation doesn't pause the world. It just means you miss the window everyone else is moving through.

Here's what the hunt actually teaches you:

The lioness isn't fearless. She's just moving before the feeling arrives.

Readiness isn't a precondition for the hunt.

It's something that shows up halfway through it — if it shows up at all.

Old way vs new way

Old way:

- "I'll start once I feel ready."

New way:

- "I move, and readiness catches up to me."

Same hunt. Different relationship with the waiting.

I live with warthogs crossing my driveway.

Zebra grazing past my window like lawnmowers.

Sometimes a giraffe, just standing there, judging me silently for staying inside on a Tuesday.

It's not normal. I know.

But living this close to the bush does something to you.

It rewires how you see everything.

Including writing.

The bush doesn't ask animals to be the same

Nobody walks up to a zebra and says, "Have you considered being more like a lion?"

Nobody tells the dung beetle to be more impressive.

Every animal in the bush has a role.

The lion hunts.

The zebra watches.

The dung beetle — unglamorous, unbothered — recycles the whole ecosystem.

Take any one of them out, and the system breaks.

Writers work the same way. We just forget it.

Online, it doesn't feel like that.

It feels like there's one shape you're supposed to be.

Bold. Loud. Hot-take machine. Lion energy, 24/7.

So if you're not that — if you're quieter, slower, more watchful — it feels like you're doing it wrong.

You're not.

You're just a different animal.

The lions:

Some writers are built to roar.

Big claims. Strong opinions. They walk into a room and the room rearranges itself around them.

They're not for everyone. They're not trying to be.

The bush needs lions. Somebody has to set the pace.

The zebras:

Most of us are zebras.

We move in herds. We watch. We notice the thing in the grass before anyone else does.

Zebras aren't weak — they're alert. Their whole gift is paying attention.

If you're the kind of writer who turns small, ordinary moments into something everyone recognizes, you're not the lion.

You're the zebra who saw the lion coming and told the herd before it was too late.

That's not a lesser role. That's survival work.

The dung beetles:

Nobody puts a dung beetle on a vision board.

But without them, the whole bush is buried in waste.

These are the writers doing the unglamorous work. Editing. Teaching the basics. Showing up daily with no virality in sight.

You don't see them trend. You see everything else functioning because of them.

The giraffes:

Tall. Slow. See further than anyone else.

These are the writers who zoom out — the big-picture thinkers, the ones connecting dots nobody else has noticed yet.

They're not first to react. They're the ones still talking about it a year later, when everyone else has moved on.

Here's what I actually believe:

You don't need to be a lion to matter in this ecosystem.

You don't need to roar to be remembered.

You need to know which animal you already are — and stop apologizing for it.

The bush isn't crowded. It's balanced.

There's room for the animal that hunts and the animal that watches and the animal that just quietly keeps the whole thing alive.

Old way vs new way

Old way:

- "I need to be louder to be seen."

New way:

- "I need to be myself, consistently, and let that be the thing people recognize."

Same goal. Different ecosystem.

So what does this mean for you?

Stop trying to write like the lion you follow.

Watch what you naturally do — the moment you notice things nobody else catches, the instinct to translate ordinary life into something that sticks — and do more of that.

The bush doesn't need another lion.

It probably already has enough.

It needs you, doing the thing only you do.

I used to think I had to be the loudest voice on this hill to be taken seriously.

Now I watch a zebra ignore a lion ten meters away, completely unbothered, and I think:

that's the whole lesson.

You don't need permission to take up space.

You just need to know your role — and play it on repeat.

There’s a reason you forget most advice within 24 hours.

Your brain is not built for information.

Your brain doesn’t “listen” — it syncs

In research by Uri Hasson, something strange happens when one person tells a story and another listens:

Their brains start to match.

Not metaphorically. Literally.

Neural activity begins to mirror each other — like two radios tuning into the same frequency.

This is called neural coupling.

And it only happens during storytelling.

Not facts. Not bullet points. Not explanations.

Stories.

This is why advice doesn’t stick

You’ve probably noticed this:

• You read something smart

• It makes sense

• You forget it by tomorrow

That’s because facts stay outside the brain.

They don’t attach to anything.

But stories?

Stories enter through experience.

Your brain simulates them like they’re happening to you.

That’s the difference.

The brain is a prediction machine, not a storage machine

Your brain isn’t asking:

“Is this true?”

It’s asking:

“Have I seen this before?”

Stories give it something to simulate.

A character. A problem. A shift. A resolution.

Now your brain can run models.

And once your brain can run it, it remembers it.

Why you can remember movies but not posts

Think about this:

You probably don’t remember a single productivity tip you saw last week.

But you remember:

• A movie scene from years ago

• A story someone told you once

• A moment that made you feel something

Same brain.

Different format.

One activates memory systems.

The other doesn’t.

The writing mistake almost everyone makes

Most online writing looks like this:

• Advice

• Tips

• Lists

• Explanations

Useful… but forgettable.

Because it skips the thing the brain actually wants:

context + emotion + movement

No story = no entry point.

No entry point = no memory.

What actually makes writing stick

If you want someone to remember what you wrote, don’t start with the lesson.

Start with:

• A moment

• A tension

• A mistake

• A decision

• A shift

Then wrap the lesson inside it.

Not the other way around.

Old way vs new way

Old way:

• “Here are 5 lessons about consistency”

New way:

• “I almost quit on day 4 — here’s what changed”

Same insight.

Different brain response.

One gets skimmed.

The other gets stored.

The uncomfortable truth

People don’t share what they understand.

They share what they feel themselves in.

That’s why stories travel.

They don’t feel like information.

They feel like recognition.

So what does this mean for you?

If you’re writing online, you don’t have a content problem.

You have a format problem.

You’re trying to be understood through explanation.

When your brain — and everyone else’s — is waiting for:

“Let me show you what happened.”

Simple shift you can make today

Before you write your next post, ask:

• What actually happened?

• Where was the tension?

• What changed?

• What did I realize after the moment?

Then write that.

Not the summary.

The scene.

Final thought

You don’t remember what you read.

You remember what your brain lived through.

That’s why storytelling wins.

Not because it’s prettier.

Because your nervous system thinks it happened to you.

Most people think great writing starts with talent.

I think it starts with clarity.

And few people understood clarity better than Kurt Vonnegut.

Not because he used complicated words.

Because he didn’t.

He wrote in a way that made difficult ideas feel simple.

Human.

Understandable.

Years ago, Vonnegut shared 8 rules for writing.

They’re not just writing rules.

They’re communication rules.

And if you’re building on Substack, they’re worth stealing.

1. Find a Subject You Care About

This sounds obvious.

It’s not.

Most people write about what they think they should write about.

The best writers write about what won’t leave them alone.

The thing they keep thinking about.

The thing they keep talking about.

The thing they wish someone would explain better.

Care is contagious.

Readers can feel it.

So can algorithms.

2. Do Not Ramble

Most writing problems are really editing problems.

The first draft is where you think.

The second draft is where you respect the reader.

If a sentence doesn’t move the thought forward:

Delete it.

Every unnecessary sentence asks the reader to work harder.

Make it easy.

3. Keep It Simple

People don’t admire complexity.

They admire clarity.

A smart writer can make a simple idea sound complicated.

A great writer can make a complicated idea sound simple.

Guess which one gets remembered.

4. Have the Guts to Cut

This is the painful one.

The clever line.

The beautiful paragraph.

The story you love.

If it doesn’t serve the piece, remove it.

Your favourite sentence is often the first thing that needs to go.

Writing is addition.

Good writing is subtraction.

5. Sound Like Yourself

Most writers spend years trying to sound professional.

Then spend years trying to sound human again.

Your voice is your advantage.

Not your weakness.

The internet has enough polished content.

What it needs is more truth.

6. Say What You Mean

Readers should never have to decode your writing.

If you’re trying to impress people, they’ll feel it.

If you’re trying to help people, they’ll feel that too.

One creates distance.

One creates trust.

Trust wins.

Every time.

7. Pity the Reader

Vonnegut wasn’t saying readers are weak.

He was saying readers are busy.

Distracted.

Tired.

Scrolling.

Respect that.

Get to the point faster.

Make the next sentence impossible not to read.

8. Give Readers Something Worth Their Time

The internet is full of content.

Very little of it is useful.

Before you publish, ask:

“What changes for the reader after reading this?”

If the answer is “nothing,” keep working.

If the answer is clarity, hope, perspective, relief, encouragement, or action—

Publish it.

The Real Lesson

Most people read Vonnegut’s rules and see writing advice.

I see audience-building advice.

Every successful note I’ve written follows the same pattern:

Simple.

Clear.

Human.

Useful.

That’s it.

Not hacks.

Not algorithms.

Not secret growth tricks.

Just writing that respects the reader.

The older I get, the more I believe this:

People don’t come back because your writing is perfect.

They come back because it feels honest.

Vonnegut knew that.

The best writers still do.

We expect it to be the day we finally become disciplined.

The day we wake up earlier.

Maybe this week doesn’t need a complete reinvention.

Maybe it just needs a beginning.

A new week is not magic. It won’t erase unfinished goals, difficult seasons, or the fact that life still feels messy sometimes. But it does offer something smaller and often more useful:

Another chance.

Another Monday means more conversations you haven’t had yet.

More ideas you haven’t explored yet.

More opportunities you cannot see yet.

More versions of yourself you haven’t met yet.

We spend so much time waiting for huge changes that we ignore the quiet ones.

The decision to try again.

The email finally sent.

The walk you almost skipped.

The post you nearly didn’t publish.

The small promise you keep to yourself.

Life changes more often through repetition than revolution.

So if this Monday feels exciting, use that energy.

If it feels heavy, move slowly.

If it feels ordinary, good. Most life happens there.

You do not need a perfect plan for the week ahead.

You need movement.

One task.

One decision.

One attempt.

One more time.

New week.

New opportunities.

New dreams.

And if not new dreams, maybe old dreams with fresh energy.

That’s enough.

For today, just begin.

Because the people who succeed aren’t the ones who avoid rejection—they’re the ones who survive it.

Most creators dramatically underestimate how much resistance comes before momentum. They post for three weeks, pitch five clients, launch one product, hear silence, and decide they’re not good enough.

That mistake costs more than growth.

It costs confidence.

It costs consistency.

It costs opportunities that would have arrived six months later if they had simply stayed in the game.

And over time, the real danger appears: you stop believing your ideas are worth sharing.

What happens next?

• You stop posting right before your audience starts noticing
• You abandon projects that only needed more reps
• You mistake lack of traction for lack of talent
• You build a habit of quitting instead of compounding

I made this mistake too—I used to think every no was evidence that I was failing.

I remember publishing things I thought would explode and watching them disappear into silence.

Posts with zero engagement.

Offers nobody bought.

Messages unanswered.

I thought effort automatically created results.

Instead, I learned something harder:

Effort creates data.

And data creates results.

What hurt most wasn’t the rejection itself—it was how quickly I let rejection define me.

I thought one no meant stop.

Then ten no’s felt personal.

Then I realized the people I admired simply collected more no’s than I was willing to.

Which is why I want to share this with you.

Expect the 100 no’s—because the one yes can change everything.

If I could go back, I would stop treating rejection like a verdict and start treating it like volume.

More attempts.

More reps.

More iterations.

Because on the other side of persistence, life looks different.

• You build resilience instead of fragile confidence
• You create enough opportunities for luck to find you
• You improve faster because feedback compounds
• You finally stay in the game long enough to get the yes

I want you to understand this because too many good creators leave early.

Not because they lacked skill.

Because they misread the process.

Your first 100 no’s are often just the price of admission.

Keep collecting them.

That does not shrink before it speaks.

That does not add “just” and “sorry” and “I might be wrong but” before every sentence.

That does not wait for permission before it starts.

You have met this version of yourself. Probably briefly. Probably in a moment of crisis when there was no time to overthink it — when you just did the thing because the thing needed doing.

And then the moment passed and the apologising started again.

A lion does not explain itself.

It does not wake up and wonder if today is a good day to be a lion.

It does not look at the other lions and think: they seem more confident than me. Maybe I should wait until I feel more ready.

It does not send a message to another lion saying: I have this idea for a hunt, I might be wrong, just an option, no pressure, ignore me if it’s silly.

It just — is what it is.

Fully.

Without apology.

Without waiting to feel like enough.

I know this is easier said than done.

I know the reasons we shrink are real. We were taught them carefully over many years by people and systems that benefited from our smallness.

Shrink in the meeting. Shrink in the negotiation. Shrink on the page. Shrink when you want something. Shrink when you have an idea. Make it smaller. Make it quieter. Make it easier for everyone to ignore.

We learned this so well we now do it automatically.

We do not even notice we are doing it.

I notice it in my writing most clearly.

The hedge at the start of a sentence that is not a hedge — it is an apology.

I might be wrong but... This is just my experience... I am no expert...

As if the experience of living a life does not qualify you to speak about it.

As if needing to add a disclaimer before your own story.

The most powerful shift I have made in my writing — and honestly, in how I carry myself — is removing the apology before the sentence.

Not adding false confidence.

Not performing certainty I do not have.

Just removing the preemptive apology that was never required in the first place.

I think consistency is important becomes consistency is the whole competitive advantage.

It might be worth considering... becomes here is what I know.

Just my experience, but... becomes here is what happened.

The thought is the same.

The person delivering it is different.

A friend asked me recently what changed when I started building online.

I thought about it for a while.

And the honest answer is: I stopped waiting for someone to tell me I was allowed to.

Not allowed to write. Not allowed to build. Not allowed to have an opinion about things I had been living for fifteen years.

I just — stopped waiting.

And in the absence of waiting, I started.

You are allowed to take up space.

You are allowed to have a strong opinion.

You are allowed to say the thing without apologising for it first.

You are allowed to build the thing without waiting for someone to confirm you are qualified.

You are allowed to be the lion.

Not aggressive. Not loud. Not performing.

Just — present.

Fully.

Without apology.

Without explanation.

The lion does not explain itself.

It just shows up.

Show up.
